Right now, I am waiting in the Jeju airport to fly back to Seoul. Fortunately, they have internet terminals that are free to use. One quick idea if you are interested in learning more about popular culture and what is hot on the web:
Check out the history section on the web browsers at public places!
You can do this at the Apple store, libraries, airports, etc… It is not good to try and figure out interests of specific demographics but this should give you an idea of what is hot and being used by the general public.

besides checking out browser history it is interesting to see in person how people use websites. i love watching where people click and where there eyes go on the pages. check out the people next to you in the library or in class. pretty interesting stuff.

I just posted about airport Internet. My beef was about charging for Wifi when my plane is delayed, as if I’m not pissed enough.
I’ve heard there is a good Wiki out there that lists free Wifi at airports. Anyone know where?

Oh, what a FANTASTIC idea! I bet it’s endlessly fascinating to read what others have unwittingly added to the history bar of a browser. Must give that a try.
As for your gf’s comment, my husband used to read my blog, but now I have to snag him and read the entries to him, because he forgets to check it. I think he gets annoyed sometimes at the time I spend blogging, and would rather forget the blog altogether.

just a note: not reading my bf’s blog everyday doesn’t mean i take absolutely no interest in him. i would hope that we have other common interests besides his blog. also, taking an interest in someone’s passion doesn’t mean it has to become my passion. (ie. bf may be interested in porn. gf may choose not to be. i think the gf can pick and choose in this case)
To be contrary to what others have suggested, I do think your idea works well to see what people are doing on the road (for all except the Apple store).
As for your GF’s comment, she may want to read your blog just so she knows what other women are saying to you in the comments. She may find she has some competition. 😉
I sometimes have similar sentences from my gf, but never so direct. You have to take a moment for both of you. Use your knowledge on keeping your readers satisfied 🙂

It’s interesting to check out the sites that others are using in public places. They make it easy since preference changing is often limited to the comp administrators so browser history, cache, cookies, etc. are all there for people like us to peruse. I’ve discovered sites I was previously unaware of by doing this.

I don’t know about how good that information would be. My guess that with airports and apple stores etc you’ll see a proliferation of hotmail, gmail, social networks, chat portals, news sites etc. But you knew that anyway.
Looking round the apple store in london, because everyone’s a tourist you’ll find interesting Italian/spanish/polish social networks/chat sites… thats interesting to find out whats going on in those countries
